A clearer brief finds a better-fit business.

Define your sector, geography, capital and operating role before the next opportunity arrives.

Decide what ownership should look like

Before opening another listing, describe the role you want after acquisition. Will you run the business day to day, lead an existing management team or integrate it into a larger group? Different ambitions call for different operating models and different levels of management depth.

Set a practical search boundary

Choose sectors where you have relevant experience, a credible operating plan or access to the right expertise. Be equally clear about geography. A business that depends on local relationships and on-site leadership may require a different commitment from a remote digital operation.

Look beyond your headline budget

The asking price is only part of the funding requirement. Consider the transaction costs, working capital, possible investment and a suitable operating cushion. Establish which funds are available and which depend on financing or other conditions. That clarity helps a broker identify opportunities that fit your circumstances.

Name your priorities and exclusions

Build a short list of essentials and preferences. Essentials might include a location, a particular operating role or a minimum level of management capability. Preferences could include a recurring revenue model or scope to expand. Avoid turning every preference into a hard filter; useful opportunities sometimes come in a different shape.

Send a brief that supports a useful reply

  • Your relevant operating or acquisition experience.

  • Preferred sectors and locations.

  • Indicative acquisition budget and funding readiness.

  • Your intended role after completion.

  • Timing, priorities and any firm exclusions.

A focused buyer brief makes the first conversation more productive. It also gives you a consistent basis for comparing opportunities as the search develops. Revisit the brief when new information changes your priorities, rather than reshaping it around every appealing listing.
